Norwich University, or NU, for short, is a private university located in Northfield, which is a town in Washington County, in the US state of Vermont, with a population of nearly 5800 inhabitans, according to the 2000 census.
The university was established in 1819, it is the oldest of six Senior Military Colleges, and is recognized by the United States Department of Defense as the `Birthplace of ROTC` (Reserve Officers' Training Corps).
It offers its students a number of 30 bachelor's degrees, plus a teacher licensure program, and four ROTC programs.
NU's athletic teams are nicknamed the cadets and they compete in NCAA Division III, Great Northeast Athletic Conference. Their distinctive colors are maroon and gold.
The list of notable Norwich alumni also contains the names of: Commander James H. Ward - first Commandant of the United States Naval Academy, and first Union Naval officer killed in action during the American Civil War, Harry Bates Thayer - President from 1919 to 1925 and Chairman of the Board of AT&T until 1928, and Bill W - co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, he was recognized by Time Magazine as being in the top 20 persons of the Time 100: Heroes and Icons in the 20th century.
